Provenienz/Short Biography provenance	William Downing Webster (1868-1913) was a well-known British ethnographica dealer from whom almost all major ethnographic collections in Great Britain and continental Europe acquired Benin pieces. In addition to a donation, the MARKK’s Benin collection today contains twelve objects that were purchased from Webster in 1900/1901.

C 3060 Das kleine Fläschchen in Kalebassenform, auf dem sich zwei Abbildungen eines menschlichen Kopfes finden, wurde wohl als Behälter für medizinische Substanzen genutzt, die zum Schutz dienten. Solche Beispiele finden sich auf mehreren Reliefplatten, wo sie von Priestern an einer Schnur um den Hals getragen werden.
Label Text (eng)	Small Medicine Bottle Unidentified workshop of the Bronze Casters Guild Igun Eronmwon / Benin Kingdom, Nigeria, 16th/17th century / Brass / Acquired from W. D. Webster, 1901, Inv. no. C 3060 The small calabash-shaped pendant bottle with two images of human heads probably served as a container for medical substances used for protection. Such examples are represented on several relief plaques, where they are worn by priests on a cord around their necks.
